Python
by Kay
While we were touring the Cambodian fishing village on the waters of Tanlé Sap, a father and his two kids motored up to our boat. The older boy sat in the front of the sampan. The younger son sat in the middle, with a live python draped around his neck. After everyone shot some photos, we tipped the dad a couple dollars and off they went.
Now every four-year-old will want one.
As much as any photo I’ve ever taken, this one has been the subject of more conversations with my husband. He thinks the father is exploiting his son. I’m not so sure. These are such poor people, kids are out all the time selling stuff–bracelets, postcards, ash trays. At least this kid got to be with his dad for the day.
Having said all that, if I were in a sampan with a PYTHON, I’d have jumped overboard and taken my chances with whatever snakes are in those waters!
Someone has to look after the python when the Dad is looking after the sampan. The kid would probably be glad to help.
